About
Elkaduwa Plantations Limited (EPL) is a publicly owned enterprise with state ownership, managing ten estates. It holds the distinction of being the most diversified Regional Plantation Company (RPC), encompassing six tea estates and four mixed crop estates. Furthermore, the company boasts a wealth of natural resources, including dolomite, quartz, and multiple water sources for potential development. Elkaduwa Estate, home to the well-known Sembuwatte Lake, is a significant tourist attraction in the country.
History of EPL
EPL, incorporated on 23rd July 1993, is a limited liability company with a single shareholder. Initially established under the Companies Act No. 17 of 1982 as a Fully Government Owned Company, it was subsequently re-registered under the Companies Act No. 7 of 2007. The company’s formation involved the transfer of lands managed by the State Plantations Corporations, following the provisions of the Conversion of Corporations and Government Owned Businesses Undertakings into Public Companies Act No. 23 of 1987, aligning with the State Privatization Policy.
Functioning as a single shareholder entity, the Golden Shareholder is the Secretary to the Treasury of the Government of Sri Lanka. The registered office is situated at No. 320, T.B Jayah Mawatha, Colombo 10.
The official notice regarding the establishment of EPL was published in the Extra Ordinary Gazette Notification No. 776/13 of July 1993, outlining its purpose to take over the 10 estates located in the Matale District, covering a total area of 4,068.89 hectares of land owned and/or managed by the SLSPC.
